Paddle Basics I
This is the foundation of the Manhattan Kayak Company paddling program, providing a comprehensive introduction to kayaking-including basic strokes (forward, back, sweep, and draw), different types of kayaks and equipment, entering and exiting a kayak, and the basics of the Hudson River.
The course focuses on kinesthetic awareness and technique. Instructors teach in accordance with the American Canoe Association guidelines. Unlike many kayak programs, the first hour of this 4 hour course is spent on land, drilling proper form for the different strokes. This helps you and your muscles to learn the stroke before being subjected to the need for balance and the uncertainty of the water.
The time spent on the water permits the techniques to "set". We also recommend that those interested in pursuing kayaking take a practice session or short tour soon after their paddle basics class.
